Qatar go down to China

Doha: Qatar lost to China in their second match in Pool A of the Asian qualifiers for the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship Rezazadeh Stadium in Ardabil, Iran, on Friday.

Qatar had opened their campaign with a thrilling come-back victory against South Korea on Thursday, but they could not get their acts together against the formidable Chinese and lost 25-22, 25-21 and 25-22.

It was the second straight victory for China who had beaten Kazakhstan 25-15, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23 on Thursday.

Qatar, who are yet to play Iran and Kazakhstan, are now under immense pressure as only the top two teams of the tournament qualify to the 2018 World Championship, to be jointly hosted by Italy and Bulgaria next year.

Qatar next take on Kazakhstan on Saturday.

Hosts Italy and Bulgaria as well as defending champions Poland have automatically qualified for the tournament while France, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Russia, Serbia, Finland, Belgium, Japan and Australia also have secured their berths through continental qualifiers.
