Qatar go down fighting to Australia in Asian volleyball

Tehran, Iran: Qatar lost to Australia 3-2 (25–23, 25–21, 23–25, 18–25,       15–10) in their first match Pool A of the Asian Men's Volleyball Championship in Iran, Tehran, on Friday.

Qatar, coached by Camilo Soto, came back strongly after losing the first to sets to tie the game at 2-2, but in the deciding fifth set, they lost their momentum and lost 10-15.

In another match in the pool, Iran blanked Sri Lanka 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-23).

Qatar take on Iran in their next match on Saturday.

In Pool B, champions Japan thrashed Hong Kong 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-11) while Chinese Taipei defeated Thailand 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-16, 25-21)

In Pool C, India pulled off a major upset, beating 2017 runners up Kazakhstan 3-2 (31-29, 25-14, 28-30, 18-25, 15-9) in a five-set thriller.

In another match in Pool C China beat Oman 3-1 (25–17, 22–25, 25–18, 25–16).

In Pool D Indonesia beat Kuwait 3-1 (22–25, 25–20, 25–17, 25–18) and South Korea blanked Pakistan 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-19).

The championship doubles up as an Olympic qualifying event, with the top two teams from each group moving to the 2020 Men’s Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament, to be held in China in January next year.
