Zverev cruises past Basavareddy, Shelton advances at Cincinnati Open

CINCINNATI: German third seed Alexander Zverev delivered a clinical performance to defeat American wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy 6-3, 6-3 in the second round of the Cincinnati Open on Sunday. The 2021 champion was in complete control throughout, firing 12 aces and not facing a single break point, despite a partisan crowd cheering for the local hope.

Zverev, who closed out the evening on the Grandstand court, will now face American Brandon Nakashima in the third round.

Meanwhile, Ben Shelton, fresh off his Canadian Open triumph, advanced after Argentina’s Camilo Ugo Carabelli retired injured during their match.
