Zverev claims third Munich title with birthday win over Shelton

MUNICH: Alexander Zverev celebrated his 28th birthday in style, cruising past American Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-4 in the Munich Open final on Sunday to claim his third title at the event and his 24th career trophy.
The world number three delivered a composed performance, dominating the 22-year-old second seed with early breaks in both sets to seal his first title of the season. The victory sees Zverev match Philipp Kohlschreiber’s record of three Munich titles, having previously triumphed in 2017 and 2018.
Backed by a passionate home crowd, the top seed made history by becoming the first German to win the tournament since its elevation to ATP 500 status.
“I definitely knew I had to play my best tennis today,” Zverev said after the win. “Ben has been playing extremely well this week. The conditions suit him extremely well… They suit me as well, to be fair. I enjoyed my birthday so far.”
The win also marks Zverev’s sixth career title on home soil, further cementing his status as a fan favorite in Germany.
