Williams embraces fresh start on favourite hard courts
CALIFORNIA: Former world number one Venus Williams is embracing a fresh chapter in her storied tennis career as she prepares to return to action at the Washington Open on Monday. The 45-year-old seven-time Grand Slam champion has endured a challenging year filled with health issues and time away from the game but is now ready to compete again — with a renewed focus on joy over results.
Williams, who previously declined wildcard entries to the tournament, accepted one this year, saying she felt ready for the challenge. “Most of the time I don’t (take up the offer to play as a wildcard),” she admitted with a laugh. “But this time I had been hitting the ball. And of course I love the game and the hard courts — it’s my favourite surface, what I feel comfortable on.”
Setting personal goals over competitive milestones, Williams is prioritising enjoyment. “My personal goal is to have fun and enjoy the moment, not put too much pressure on myself,” she said, highlighting her commitment to a positive mindset in her latest return to the sport she loves.
