Wawrinka among nine wildcard recipients for 2025 Australian Open
MELBOURNE: Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka has been granted a wildcard to compete in the 2025 Australian Open, tournament organizers announced on Friday. The 39-year-old Swiss star, who won his first major title at Melbourne Park in 2014, will return to the venue where he enjoyed one of the greatest triumphs of his career.
“I’m incredibly grateful to receive a wildcard into the Australian Open in 2025,” said Wawrinka. His victory in 2014 propelled him to a career-high world ranking of number three and established him as a force in men’s tennis.
Wawrinka went on to claim the French Open title in 2015 and the U.S. Open crown in 2016. However, his recent Grand Slam performances have been less fruitful, with his last appearance in a major quarter-final coming at Melbourne in 2021. Earlier this year, Wawrinka suffered a disappointing first-round exit at the Australian Open.
Despite his struggles, Wawrinka remains a fan favorite and a dangerous opponent on the big stage. His wildcard entry sets up the potential for a memorable campaign as he looks to recapture the form that made him one of the game’s elite players.
