United States and Spain seal spots in Davis Cup final 8
DOHA: The United States made a triumphant return to the Davis Cup Final 8 after securing a 3-0 victory over Slovakia in Group C action in Zuhai on Friday. Mackenzie McDonald set the tone with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Lukas Klein in the opening singles match. Brandon Nakashima followed suit, defeating Jozef Kovalik in straight sets, giving the Americans an unassailable 2-0 lead. In the doubles, Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram mounted a comeback to win 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 10-1 against Norbert Gombos and Klein, sealing the overall 3-0 triumph.
This victory marked the second group win for Bob Bryan’s U.S. team, which is missing top singles players like U.S. Open runner-up Taylor Fritz. Earlier in the competition, they also defeated Chile 3-0. As a result of their win, Germany also secured their place in the Final 8, set to take place in Malaga in November. The U.S. and Germany will face off in the final group game on Saturday with top spot in Group C at stake.
Spain also booked their spot in the knockout stage after beating France in Group B. Their hard-fought victory against the Czech Republic earlier in the week paved the way for qualification, securing Spain’s place alongside the U.S. in the next phase of the prestigious tournament.
