Swiatek launches French Open campaign in style

PARIS: Iga Swiatek began her pursuit of a fourth French Open title with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory over French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean in the first round on Monday.

The world number one dominated the match on Court Philippe Chatrier, securing the win in just 61 minutes.

Swiatek, who is aiming to become the first woman to win three consecutive Roland Garros titles since Justine Henin in 2007, expressed her delight at returning to the tournament. “I’m really happy to be back. Feel like I’m playing really good tennis so hoping to be here as long as possible,” said the 22-year-old Pole.

With this victory, Swiatek sets up a highly anticipated second-round clash with fellow four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. Swiatek is also striving to become only the second woman, after Serena Williams, to win the Madrid, Rome, and French Opens in the same year.

Reflecting on her recent form, Swiatek said, “These last tournaments give me a lot of confidence… But every tournament is a different story, a different chapter, so I’m just trying to focus on the next match.”
