Swiatek faces must-win clash against Kasatkina to keep WTA Finals hopes alive
RIYADH: World number two Iga Swiatek is set to take on Daria Kasatkina in a decisive match on Thursday to keep her WTA Finals campaign alive. Swiatek, who needs a victory to stay in contention for a semi-final spot, will also rely on American Coco Gauff defeating Barbora Krejcikova in another group-stage clash.
Swiatek’s path to the semis grew more challenging after she fell 6-3, 6-4 to Gauff, the top American player who has already secured her place in the final four. Meanwhile, Jessica Pegula, seeded sixth, exited the tournament following a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Krejcikova. Pegula, who was nursing a knee injury, has withdrawn, with the WTA announcing on Wednesday that she will be replaced by Kasatkina.
Kasatkina, currently ranked world number nine, steps in as the first alternate and will face Swiatek in the crucial “orange group” finale. For Swiatek, a win against Kasatkina is essential to keep her hopes alive, while a loss would end her journey in Riyadh.
