Swiatek dominates Sabalenka to claim third Italian Open title

ROME: Iga Swiatek triumphed over Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 6-3 to secure her third Italian Open title on Saturday, underscoring her dominance in women’s tennis. This victory comes just weeks after Swiatek’s win at the Madrid Open, once again proving her supremacy over the world number two, Sabalenka.

Swiatek’s win in Rome marked her 21st career title and extended her unbeaten run on clay to 12 matches, positioning her as a formidable contender for the upcoming French Open, where she is a three-time champion and the defending titleholder.

Reflecting on her victory, the 22-year-old Swiatek acknowledged the challenge posed by Sabalenka. “After Madrid, I knew it would not be easy. It can always go both ways,” Swiatek remarked, expressing gratitude towards Sabalenka for the competitive match. “Thank you for sharing the court with me and pushing me to be better.”

The match began with Swiatek breaking Sabalenka twice in the first set, capitalizing on the Belarusian’s 12 unforced errors. Although Sabalenka attempted a comeback in the second set, pushing for a lead at 2-0 with five break points, Swiatek maintained her composure and held serve.

As the second set progressed to 3-3, Swiatek broke Sabalenka’s serve twice more, clinching the title without dropping a set. Sabalenka graciously congratulated Swiatek and vowed to return stronger next year. “I love this tournament… I’ll come back stronger next year and hopefully win the trophy,” Sabalenka said, adding her hopes for a rematch in the final at Roland Garros.

In response, Swiatek confidently replied, “We will see about the Roland Garros final.”

With the French Open commencing on May 26, Swiatek’s recent performances signal a strong warning to her rivals, as she aims to defend her title and extend her reign on the clay courts of Paris.(Reuters)
