Sinner to face Medvedev in Shanghai Masters quarter-finals after straight-set wins
World number one Jannik Sinner will meet Daniil Medvedev in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals after both secured straight-set victories on Wednesday. Sinner overcame American Ben Shelton 6-4, 7-6 (7/1), while Medvedev defeated Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6 (7/3), 6-3.
Sinner avenged last year’s defeat to Shelton, playing with confidence as he claimed victory in 88 minutes. The Italian broke Shelton in the ninth game of the first set before dominating the second-set tiebreak. “It was very tough, you don’t have so much control when you play against him… I just tried to stay strong mentally,” said Sinner.
Meanwhile, Medvedev and Tsitsipas met for the 14th time. After Tsitsipas broke early in the second set, Medvedev responded by breaking in the fourth and eighth games to secure the win. Looking ahead to his clash with Sinner, Medvedev said, “I’m gonna bring the fight… I could have done much better in the US Open… So I’m going to try to explore this potential tomorrow.”
Also advancing to the quarter-finals is world number two Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Gael Monfils 6-4, 7-5 for his 12th straight win. Alcaraz noted Monfils’ previous win in Cincinnati was “on his mind” during the match.
