BUENOS AIRES: Diego Schwartzman isn’t ready to bid farewell to his hometown fans just yet. The 32-year-old Argentinian, competing in his final event before retirement, displayed remarkable resilience as he overcame seventh-seeded Chilean Nicolas Jarry 7-6 (10), 4-6, 6-3 in the first round of the IEB+ Argentina Open on Wednesday.

Playing in front of a supportive Buenos Aires crowd, Schwartzman battled through a tense opening-set tiebreak before ultimately securing victory in three hard-fought sets. His determination to extend his farewell tour thrilled local fans who have long cherished his passionate performances on clay.

Elsewhere, top seed Alex Zverev of Germany advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic, while Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca made history by defeating No. 8 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina 6-3, 6-3. At just 18 years and five months old, Fonseca became the third-youngest winner in the tournament’s history.

The day also saw some notable upsets, with fourth-seeded Alejandro Tabilo of Chile and No. 6 seed Sebastian Baez of Argentina exiting early. Meanwhile, fifth-seeded Francisco Cerundolo claimed family bragging rights by defeating his brother Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-2, 6-3.
