RIYADH: Aryna Sabalenka took a decisive step in her pursuit of the year-end No. 1 ranking, defeating China’s Zheng Qinwen 6-3, 6-4 in her opening round-robin match at the WTA Finals in Riyadh. The Belarusian, who has enjoyed a stellar season with Australian and U.S. Open titles, demonstrated her power and precision, outplaying Zheng in key moments to extend her winning record over the Chinese player in 2024.

Competing in the first-ever professional women’s tennis event hosted by Saudi Arabia, Sabalenka praised her opponent, acknowledging the intensity of their rivalry. “She’s such a great player.
