Sabalenka starts strong in WTA finals, eyes year-end No. 1 with win over Zheng

RIYADH: Aryna Sabalenka took a decisive step in her pursuit of the year-end No. 1 ranking, defeating China’s Zheng Qinwen 6-3, 6-4 in her opening round-robin match at the WTA Finals in Riyadh. The Belarusian, who has enjoyed a stellar season with Australian and U.S. Open titles, demonstrated her power and precision, outplaying Zheng in key moments to extend her winning record over the Chinese player in 2024.

Competing in the first-ever professional women’s tennis event hosted by Saudi Arabia, Sabalenka praised her opponent, acknowledging the intensity of their rivalry. “She’s such a great player. We always have great battles,” Sabalenka shared. “She plays aggressive tennis, which forces me to step in and go for it. That’s why I bring my best tennis, and I’m super happy with the first win.”

The match saw Sabalenka edge ahead in a tight opening set, breaking Zheng in the sixth game and consolidating her lead by holding serve to love. The win places Sabalenka in a promising position as she aims to close out her breakthrough year at the top of the women’s game.
