Rain Delays Washington Open Finals, Disrupts Canadian Open Schedule

WASHINGTON: Persistent rain forced the suspension of the Washington Open women’s final on Sunday and delayed play at the Canadian Open, with tournament organisers rescheduling several matches.

The Mubadala DC Open women’s singles final between top seed Jessica Pegula of the United States and the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala was halted in the second set after repeated rain interruptions.

After a three-hour delay before play began, Pegula claimed the opening set 6-4, while Eala led 2-1 in the second when rain stopped play again, prompting organisers to postpone the remainder of the match until Monday.

The men’s singles final between American Taylor Fritz and Spain’s Rafael Jodar was also pushed back by a day.

“Matches have been cancelled for tonight. The women’s singles final will now take place at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow. The men’s singles final will take place not before 1:00 p.m. tomorrow,” tournament organisers said on social media.

Wet weather also disrupted the Canadian Open, with play suspended in both Toronto and Montreal.

In Toronto, action on the Grandstand court was stopped during the match between Poland’s Magdalena Frech and France’s Leolia Jeanjean before organisers called off the remainder of Sunday’s schedule.

“All matches have been cancelled for tonight. Sunny skies in our future. Action resumes tomorrow,” organisers said.

In Montreal, rain first forced the postponement of the day session before tournament officials cancelled the evening schedule as poor weather persisted.

The Canadian Open, a key tune-up event ahead of the U.S. Open later this month, runs from Aug. 1-14, with the women’s tournament being held in Toronto and the men’s event in Montreal.
