Raducanu declines treatment for insect bite over doping concerns ahead of Australian Open

MELBOURNE: British tennis star Emma Raducanu revealed that she refused treatment for an insect bite due to fears of ingesting a potentially contaminated substance ahead of the Australian Open, which begins this weekend. Speaking at a pre-tournament press conference, the former U.S. Open champion explained how recent doping controversies have heightened her caution regarding medications and treatments.

“I got really badly bitten by I don’t know what—like ants, mosquitoes, something. I’m allergic, I guess,” Raducanu shared. Despite the discomfort caused by the bite, the 20-year-old opted against treatment to ensure compliance with anti-doping regulations.

Raducanu, who faces Russian 26th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in her opening match, emphasized the importance of vigilance in the current sporting climate. Her remarks underline the growing pressure athletes face to maintain strict adherence to anti-doping protocols, even in seemingly minor situations.(Reuters)
