ROME: In a stunning upset at the Italian Open, Tommy Paul delivered a masterclass performance to defeat defending champion Daniil Medvedev. Paul’s 6-1, 6-4 victory marked his first quarter-final appearance in Rome, showcasing his dominance on the court.

Paul’s victory was nothing short of impressive, as he barely broke a sweat in dashing Medvedev’s hopes. The one-sided contest lasted a mere 73 minutes, with Paul unleashing 18 winners and showcasing his prowess at the net with 16 points won.

Reflecting on his triumph, Paul expressed satisfaction in avenging past defeats, stating, “He beat the brakes off me last year and got me at Indian Wells. So this one was good.”

Next up for Paul is a showdown with seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz, who secured his spot in the quarter-finals after a hard-fought battle against Sebastian Baez. Hurkacz’s resilience prevailed as he overcame Baez in a grueling two hours and 39 minutes.
