Navone stuns Auger-Aliassime in major upset at BMW Open

MUNICH: Unseeded Argentine Mariano Navone delivered the shock of the day at the BMW Open in Munich, knocking out No. 3 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in a thrilling first-round battle on Tuesday.

Navone, ranked 70th in the world, showed incredible resilience, coming back from a set down and saving 14 of 19 break points. He won 83 percent of his second-serve points and broke Auger-Aliassime in the decisive final set, sealing the win in just over three hours.

The upset-filled day also saw Czech No. 6 seed Jakub Mensik fall to German wild card Yannick Hanfmann 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3, while No. 8 seed Denis Shapovalov was forced to retire against German lucky loser Diego Dedura-Palomero, who led 7-6 (2), 3-0 at the time. At just 17, Dedura-Palomero became the first player born in 2008 or later to win an ATP Tour match.

Meanwhile, No. 4 seed Ugo Humbert of France and No. 5 seed Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina advanced safely to the next round.
