Nadal faces tough French Open start against Zverev in anticipated farewell

PARIS: In what is widely expected to be his final appearance at the French Open, Rafa Nadal, the record 14-time champion, has been handed a challenging first-round match against fourth seed Alexander Zverev. The draw, announced on Thursday, sets the stage for a dramatic start to the tournament, with the tennis world buzzing over the early heavyweight clash.

Nadal, unseeded this year after an extended absence due to injury, has seen his ranking plummet. He missed last year’s French Open and has struggled to regain his form. With retirement looming at the end of this season, the pairing with Zverev marks a significant hurdle in his bid for a 15th title at Roland Garros. Their last encounter was the 2022 semi-final, where Zverev retired due to an injury, paving the way for Nadal’s eventual victory.

“It’s coming a little early in the tournament surely,” commented former world number one and current tournament director Amelie Mauresmo. “This is good news for neither of them.”

Nadal’s path won’t get easier if he advances; he could face 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, aiming for a record 25th Grand Slam title, will begin his campaign against local favorite Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Top-ranked Iga Swiatek, defending her French Open title, starts her journey against a qualifier.

The draw also produced another notable matchup with Stan Wawrinka set to play three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray, a match that elicited cheers from the audience. This year’s French Open promises to be a thrilling event with high stakes and compelling narratives from the onset.
