Medvedev fined $76,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct at Australian Open

MELBOURNE: Daniil Medvedev’s 2025 Australian Open campaign was overshadowed by his unsportsmanlike conduct, leading to hefty fines amounting to $76,000. The Russian star, known for his fiery on-court persona, displayed two incidents of frustration during the tournament.

In his opening-round victory against Thai wildcard Kasidit Samrej, Medvedev smashed his racket against the net five times in a moment of frustration. The meltdown earned him widespread attention but also set the tone for further disciplinary action.

In the second round, Medvedev faced American teenager Learner Tien in a grueling five-set battle. Frustrations boiled over again as Medvedev hurled his racket toward the sideline, incurring a point penalty. Adding to the controversy, the 28-year-old failed to attend the mandatory post-match press conference after his defeat.

Tournament organizers penalized Medvedev with fines totaling $76,000 for the incidents, a significant portion of the $123,000 prize money awarded to second-round players. While Medvedev’s career earnings exceed $45 million, the fine serves as a reminder of the consequences of unsportsmanlike behavior at the sport’s highest level.
