Gauff defeats Sabalenka to reach WTA finals showdown with Qinwen

RIYADH: American tennis sensation Coco Gauff defeated world number one Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(4), 6-3 in a thrilling semi-final match at the WTA Finals on Friday, setting up a final clash with China’s rising star, Zheng Qinwen. Gauff’s victory marked a significant milestone as she reached her first final in the prestigious end-of-season tournament.
The match between Gauff, ranked world number three, and Sabalenka, had been highly anticipated, with their head-to-head record tied at 4-4. The opening set lived up to expectations as both players exchanged early breaks. Sabalenka broke serve to take a 6-5 lead, putting her in position to close out the set. However, Gauff fought back, forcing a tiebreak, where she raced to a 6-1 lead. Despite Sabalenka’s late push to save two set points, Gauff held her nerve and captured the set.
Gauff’s win ended Sabalenka’s hopes of claiming her first WTA Finals title, though the Belarusian will finish the year as world number one. In the other semi-final, seventh seed Zheng Qinwen advanced to her first WTA Finals championship match, defeating Barbora Krejcikova 6-3, 7-5.
With both players aiming for their maiden WTA Finals title, Gauff and Zheng will face off in a high-stakes showdown on Saturday that promises to be an intense battle between two of the tour’s most promising young talents.
