French Open: Heat wave hits Roland Garros

PARIS: Despite the intense heat wave affecting the French Open, the tournament’s extreme weather policy has not been enforced so far this week.

Even if it had been activated, the retractable roof on Court Philippe-Chatrier likely would not have been closed before or during world number one Jannik Sinner’s defeat.

Under the tournament’s rules, additional cooling breaks are only introduced when the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) — a measure that factors in temperature, humidity, sunlight, wind, and other conditions — reaches 30.1°C (86°F) or higher.

In such cases, players are allowed a 10-minute cooling break between the second and third sets in women’s matches, and between the third and fourth sets in men’s matches.
