Fils overcomes Rune to reach Japan Open final
TOKYO: Arthur Fils battled through two tense tiebreaks to defeat world number 14 Holger Rune 7-6(8), 7-6(10) on Monday, securing a spot in the Japan Open final. The 20-year-old Frenchman will now face compatriot Ugo Humbert in Tuesday’s final, where he aims to claim his second title of the year.
In the first semi-final of the day, Humbert overcame Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, setting up an all-French showdown. Humbert, who has already won two hardcourt titles this year, will look to add a third to his impressive season.
Fils had to overcome a close line call in the first set tiebreak, with Rune leveling the score at 6-6 after a replayed point. However, Fils remained composed, clinching the set with a delicate backhand that left Rune visibly frustrated, slamming his racket in anger.
Fils broke Rune early in the second set to lead 2-0, but Rune fought back, almost taking control at 4-3. Fils saved a crucial break point, forcing another tiebreak, where he held his nerve to seal the victory and advance to the final.
