Djokovic leads Serbia to 3-0 Davis Cup victory over Greece

Novak Djokovic and Hamad Medjedovic secured a 3-0 Davis Cup play-off victory for Serbia against Greece on Sunday, ensuring their place in World Group I. The duo triumphed 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the doubles match against Aristotelis Thanos and Petros Tsitsipas, the younger brother of Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was unable to compete.

This marked Djokovic’s return to competitive tennis following his third-round exit at the US Open. On Saturday, Miomir Kecmanovic opened Serbia’s account with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Thanos. Djokovic followed up with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory against Ioannis Xilas, dispatching the world No. 770 in just 45 minutes.

Reflecting on his potential final Davis Cup appearance in Belgrade, the 37-year-old Djokovic hinted at a passing of the torch: “It may be the last time I play in front of a Belgrade Davis Cup audience. Some young tennis players who will defend the colours of the national team need to take over the helm.”

The win keeps Serbia in the top tier of the Davis Cup competition as they look to the future.
