Diana Shnaider: From polka dot bandanas to tennis stardom

MOSCOW: Diana Shnaider’s breakout 2024 season has cemented her as one of tennis’s rising stars, thanks to her unique style and an impressive all-court game. The 20-year-old Russian captured four WTA titles across three surfaces, propelling her to a career-high world ranking of No. 13.

Shnaider showcased her versatility by winning on hard courts in Hua Hin and Hong Kong, on grass in Bad Homburg, and on clay in Budapest. Her achievements tied Aryna Sabalenka’s season tally of four titles, though Sabalenka’s wins included two Grand Slams. Only Iga Swiatek claimed more titles in 2024, underscoring Shnaider’s growing presence in the sport.

Ranked outside the top 100 just two years ago and ending 2023 at No. 60, Shnaider’s meteoric rise reflects both her determination and talent. Off the court, her trademark polka dot bandanas have become her signature, but her focus remains on elevating her game.

“It’s nice to be in that company,” Shnaider said when comparing herself to the likes of Swiatek and Sabalenka. “I’ll definitely push harder to be on the same stage as them, to win more tournaments and at even higher categories. That’s the future. This year, I did an amazing job.”(Reuters)
