Australia secures Davis Cup semi-final spot with thrilling win over the United States

MALAGA: Australia booked their place in the Davis Cup semi-finals on Thursday, as doubles duo Matthew Ebden and Jordan Thompson delivered a clutch performance to defeat the United States. The pair triumphed 6-4, 6-4 against Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton, sealing Australia’s 2-1 victory and their third consecutive appearance in the semi-finals of the prestigious men’s team event.

The U.S. entered the tie as slight favourites, given their depth and pedigree in the competition. However, Australia drew first blood when Thanasi Kokkinakis edged past Ben Shelton in a dramatic opening singles match. Kokkinakis survived four match points in an epic third-set tiebreak, ultimately prevailing 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(14).

Tommy Paul restored parity for the Americans, defeating Alex de Minaur in straight sets to set up a decisive doubles clash. Olympic champion Ebden and Thompson then rose to the occasion, outclassing Paul and Shelton to secure the win for captain Lleyton Hewitt’s side.
