Andy Murray announces retirement after Paris Olympics

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray has announced his retirement from professional tennis following the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“This will be my last ever tennis tournament,” Murray wrote on social media, reflecting on the significance of representing Great Britain at the Olympics.

The 37-year-old, currently ranked 121st, has battled injuries in recent years, undergoing hip surgery in 2019 and further procedures this year for ankle and spinal issues. He was forced to withdraw from Wimbledon singles but played doubles with his brother Jamie.

“It’s hard,” Murray admitted. “I love the sport, but time has caught up with me.”

Murray’s career highlights include ending Britain’s long wait for a Wimbledon champion in 2013, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final. He repeated the feat in 2016 and added a US Open title in 2012.

Beyond Grand Slams, Murray achieved Olympic glory, winning singles gold in 2012 and 2016, becoming the first player to achieve the feat in both genders. He also spearheaded Britain’s 2015 Davis Cup victory, their first in 79 years.

Murray’s retirement marks the end of an illustrious career, leaving him a legend in British and Olympic tennis history.
