Alcaraz’s Sunshine double dreams dashed by Dimitrov at Miami Open

MIAMI: Carlos Alcaraz’s aspirations for a Sunshine Double were dashed in a stunning turn of events as the top-seeded Spaniard suffered a 6-2, 6-4 defeat to Grigor Dimitrov on Thursday at the Miami Open. Dimitrov, the Bulgarian 11th seed, displayed impeccable form, winning 77% of his first-serve points and securing victory in a brisk 92-minute encounter.

Despite Alcaraz’s recent triumph at Indian Wells, where he claimed the title just 11 days ago, his journey in Miami was cut short, leaving him three wins shy of achieving the elusive Sunshine Double, last accomplished by Roger Federer in 2017. The defeat was particularly crushing for Alcaraz, who had entered the tournament brimming with confidence.

Dimitrov’s stellar performance saw him turn aside four out of five break points faced, while also breaking Alcaraz’s serve four times. With this impressive victory, Dimitrov advances to the semi-finals, where he will face German fourth seed Alexander Zverev.

Zverev, for his part, overcame challenging conditions to secure his spot in the semi-finals with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in the day’s first match on the Stadium court. The stage is now set for an electrifying clash between Dimitrov and Zverev, promising tennis fans an enthralling semi-final showdown at the Miami Open.
