Alcaraz upset by Humbert in thrilling Paris Masters clash

PARIS: French Open and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz saw his Paris Masters journey end in a gripping three-set battle against Frenchman Ugo Humbert, who claimed a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 victory on Thursday. Humbert, ranked 18th in the world, stunned Alcaraz with a quick 26-minute first set, as the Spanish world number two struggled to find his rhythm on the Parisian court.

Determined to bounce back, Alcaraz fought hard in the second set, surging to a 5-2 lead and sealing it with a flawless hold to love. The Spanish star seemed poised for a comeback, but Humbert, energized by a roaring home crowd, powered through the third set to secure the win.

With this victory, Humbert became the first Frenchman since 2019 to defeat a top-five player at the Paris Masters, matching a feat previously achieved by his coach, Jeremy Chardy, who overcame Daniil Medvedev five years ago.

Reflecting on the match, Alcaraz praised his opponent’s performance: “I have to congratulate Ugo. I think his performance has been really high. The way he hits the ball is unbelievable. It’s amazing,” he shared at the post-match press conference.(Reuters)
