Alcaraz begins US Open campaign as Williams makes landmark appearance

Carlos Alcaraz will launch his quest for a sixth Grand Slam crown on Monday night at the US Open, sharing the spotlight with Venus Williams as the American prepares for a record 25th appearance in New York.
Alcaraz, the world No. 2, opens against big-serving Reilly Opelka under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 22-year-old Spaniard captured his first major title at Flushing Meadows in 2022 and could be set for another high-profile clash with Italian rival Jannik Sinner later in the tournament, having already met him in two Slam finals this year.
Williams, meanwhile, faces Czech 11th seed Karolina Muchova in a match charged with history and symbolism. The 45-year-old, ranked 602nd, received a wild card after returning from a 16-month layoff in July. She first played the US Open as a teenager in 1997, famously reaching the final before losing to Martina Hingis.
“It does not get old; it just gets more exciting,” Williams said of competing again. Monday’s match also coincides with the 75th anniversary of Althea Gibson breaking the color barrier at the US national championships in 1950. “I think the most important part is that we are celebrating it and recognizing it… just shining light on it and seeing, just acknowledging that,” Williams added.
