Marchand takes gold and McIntosh wins third title at swimming worlds

Leon Marchand claimed gold in the men’s 200m individual medley at the world championships in Singapore on Thursday, just a day after breaking Ryan Lochte’s long-standing world record in the event.
The 23-year-old Frenchman, who clocked 1:52.69 in the semi-finals, returned to the pool to win the final in 1:53.68 — the second-fastest time in history. “I felt so excited yesterday that I couldn’t sleep,” said Marchand. “So I think I lost a lot of energy yesterday night, but it was my goal to break the record, so I was really happy with it.”
In the women’s 200m butterfly, Summer McIntosh earned her third title of the meet in 2:01.99, just 0.18 seconds off the world record. The 18-year-old Canadian has already won the 400m freestyle and 200m medley. Romania’s David Popovici completed a freestyle double by winning the 100m in 46.51 seconds, while Australia triumphed in the women’s 4x200m relay.
