Olympic women’s 10km marathon swimming event to proceed as scheduled

PARIS: The Olympic women’s 10km marathon swimming event will proceed as planned on Thursday at 7:30 a.m. (0530 GMT) in the Seine river, following successful water quality tests, according to Paris Games organizers. Both the organizers and World Aquatics confirmed that the latest water assessments met the necessary thresholds, allowing the event to go ahead.

In a statement released on Thursday, the governing body, World Aquatics, stated, “World Aquatics have confirmed that the women’s marathon swimming will go ahead as planned on 8 August at 7.30AM,” in coordination with Paris 2024 organizers.

An early morning meeting on Thursday, attended by representatives from World Aquatics, Paris Games organizers, and other key stakeholders, confirmed the water quality results. The women’s race on Thursday and the men’s race on Friday will take place on a 1.67km loop in the Seine, completed six times between the Alexandre III bridge and Pont de l’Alma, right through the heart of the French capital.

A familiarization session for the marathon swimming took place on Wednesday after a cancellation on Tuesday due to water pollution concerns. With the green light from the latest tests, athletes can now look forward to competing in this iconic setting.(Reuters)
