Zhou voted Driver of the Day at Qatar Grand Prix
DOHA: Zhou Guanyu earned the admiration of Formula One fans by being voted Driver of the Day at the Qatar Grand Prix, where he secured Sauber’s first points of the season with an impressive eighth-place finish. The result came in the penultimate race of a challenging campaign for the Swiss team, which remains firmly at the bottom of the championship standings.
For Zhou, who faces an uncertain future without a confirmed seat for 2025, the performance was a much-needed boost. “Mentally, it has been a really draining season for me, for Valtteri (Bottas), and for the whole team,” Zhou told Sky Sports. “This was our best opportunity after an amazing Saturday performance, and we wanted to show what we can do. Today’s race was very clean and executed well, I think.”
Reflecting on the effort required to achieve this result, Zhou highlighted the unseen dedication of the team: “There is a lot of work done that people don’t see behind the scenes to just continue to be there every weekend, just hoping we will see a return. And today is the day.”
The 25-year-old has been a topic of speculation in the paddock, with potential links to a reserve role at Ferrari, where a vacancy opens with Oliver Bearman’s move to Haas. Zhou has also been rumored to be on the radar for GM’s Cadillac entry in 2026, given managerial connections.
While Sauber’s season has been a struggle, Zhou’s determination and resilience have given the team and its fans something to celebrate in the final stages of the season.
