Verstappen receives fourth F1 Champion’s trophy in Kigali
KIGALI: Rwandan President Paul Kagame joined Formula One superstar Max Verstappen on stage as the Dutchman collected his fourth consecutive F1 World Champion’s trophy during the FIA awards gala in Kigali, Rwanda, on Friday. The ceremony marked the first time the prestigious event was held on African soil, underscoring the continent’s growing interest in Formula One.
Verstappen, 27, received the trophy from FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, with President Kagame by his side. Earlier in the evening, Kagame had expressed Rwanda’s ambitions to host a Formula One race in the future, signaling the country’s intent to strengthen its ties with the sport.
Reflecting on his achievement, Verstappen, who now joins an elite group of only six drivers to win four or more championships since F1 began in 1950, praised his team for their efforts.
“It’s amazing, four titles is definitely incredible. Of course, I also hope it doesn’t stop here. I hope we can be successful for a longer period of time,” said Verstappen. “This year, the competition is very close, but then again in 2026 a lot is going to change.”(Reuters)
