Qatar’s Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah in a class of his own at Silk Way Rally
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia: Qatar’s Nasser Saleh al Attiyah was in a class of his own in the fourth stage of the Silk Way Rally as he continued to dominate the standings.
Even as drivers and riders struggled around him, Toyota Gazoo Racing Overdrive’s Al Attiyah and his French co-driver Mathieu Baumel was in top gear throughout the 470-kilometre circular route around Ulaanbaatar to take his fourth stage win.
“We drove at our own pace today. It is never easy on a special that is so fast and so long to be quick without making a mistake. This is our fourth stage win in a row but we must take care. Each day we try and increase our lead to have a bigger gap," said Al Attiyah who now enjoys an overall lead of more than 26 minutes over second-placed Chinese driver Liu Kun.
Eric Van Loon of P-B/Toyota Overdrive was second while Liu (Hanwei SMG) finished third.
“An amazing experience! I have been racing for 12 years and I’ve never done anything like that. 470 kilometres flat out, through amazing scenery, it was just fantastic, even if we had a lot of dust, especially from the trucks, who weren’t easy to overtake. I’m also very happy to find myself back up at the front of the pack, after the mechanical problems we had on Monday," said Eric Van Loon.
