Piastri powers to the top, but stays grounded after Saudi Arabian GP win

RIYADH: Oscar Piastri made history on Sunday by becoming the first Australian to lead the Formula One world championship since 2010, following a composed victory at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The McLaren driver, now a three-time winner this season, also became the first to claim back-to-back victories in 2025.

Despite the milestone and the fanfare in Jeddah, Piastri remained grounded. “I’m not that bothered by the fact that I’m leading the championship,” he said, emphasizing the importance of the hard work behind his success. “I want to be leading it after round 24, not round five.”

His triumph marks a significant turnaround after finishing ninth at the season opener in Melbourne. With consistent pace and growing confidence, Piastri now leads teammate Lando Norris by 10 points in the standings.

As Formula One heads into a crucial stretch of the season, Piastri’s mix of calm focus and competitive drive suggests that his chase for the ultimate prize is only just beginning.(Reuters)
