Norris triumphs in rain-soaked Australian Grand Prix

MELBOURNE: McLaren’s Lando Norris stormed to victory in a dramatic Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, fending off defending champion Max Verstappen in a thrilling finish to the Formula One season opener. The rain-hit race at Albert Park saw multiple crashes and safety cars, with only 14 of the 20 drivers making it to the finish line.
Norris, who started from pole, showcased his skill in treacherous conditions to secure his first-ever win in Melbourne and the fifth of his career. His victory also ended Verstappen’s dominance at the top of the championship standings, a streak that stretched back to May 2022.
Mercedes’ George Russell completed the podium in third, while Norris’ McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, who had started second, slipped to ninth after an off-track excursion dashed his hopes of a home victory.
“It was tough with Max right behind me,” Norris admitted after the race. “But I’m thrilled to start the season like this.”
With this win, Norris has made a strong statement in his pursuit of the drivers’ title, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
