McLaren to exit Formula E after 2024-25 season

LONDON: McLaren has announced it will withdraw from the all-electric Formula E championship at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season. The move marks the end of a three-season run in the electric series and follows a strategic realignment by the team to prioritize its efforts in Formula One, IndyCar, and a forthcoming hypercar program set to debut in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2027.
The reigning Formula One Constructors’ Champions confirmed the decision on Friday, stating it was the result of a broader evaluation of the company’s motorsport commitments.
“The time is right to explore other opportunities that more closely align with McLaren Racing’s overall strategic direction — including our 2027 entry into the FIA World Endurance Championship,” said CEO Zak Brown. “For now, we are focused on setting this great team up for future success by working towards securing a new owner.”
McLaren originally entered Formula E by acquiring the British-based team previously operated by Mercedes, which exited the series after the 2022 season.
Despite McLaren’s exit, Formula E officials remain optimistic about the team’s future within the championship. A spokesperson acknowledged the evolving nature of motorsport partnerships but affirmed that the current outfit is already in talks with potential investors.
“We are confident the team will remain a strong presence in the championship, operating under a new identity if required,” the spokesperson said.
McLaren’s upcoming focus on endurance racing reflects a renewed industry interest in hybrid and electric hypercar development, signaling an ambitious expansion of the brand’s motorsport legacy beyond single-seater series.(Reuters)
