Kubica silences doubters with historic Le Mans victory

LE MANS,France: Robert Kubica etched his name in motorsport history on Sunday by winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans, becoming the first Polish driver to claim an overall victory at the iconic endurance race. The triumph comes 14 years after a life-threatening rally crash that left him with lasting damage to his right arm.
Kubica, now 40, shared the cockpit with teammates Yifei Ye and Phil Hanson, driving for Team WRT. The victory marks a remarkable chapter in the former Formula One driver’s career, silencing those who doubted his ability to compete at the highest level after his 2011 accident.
“I don’t think my limitations are limiting behind the wheel,” Kubica told the BBC. “If someone had doubts in the past, I showed those doubts should not be in place.”
Once a rising star in Formula One—winning the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix and finishing fourth overall that season—Kubica was on the verge of a move to Ferrari when his career was derailed by the crash. He returned to racing in 2012 in rallying and endurance formats, eventually making a full F1 comeback in 2019.
“There were some very extreme quotes from some people which hurt me,” he added. “I am the first one who would never like to be back just for marketing or to be a PR muppet.”
Kubica’s Le Mans victory is a testament to resilience, determination, and a passion for racing that refused to fade.
