Horner sacked by Red Bull after 20 years in charge amid slump and internal rifts

Christian Horner was dismissed as Red Bull team principal on Wednesday, ending a two-decade tenure that delivered six constructors’ titles and eight drivers’ championships. The 51-year-old Englishman, who took charge when the team entered Formula One in 2005, has been a central figure in Red Bull’s rise, overseeing Sebastian Vettel’s four titles and Max Verstappen’s recent dominance.

Horner’s exit follows months of turmoil. Although he was twice cleared of allegations of inappropriate behaviour, tensions remained. Verstappen’s father, Jos, had warned that Red Bull risked being “torn apart” if Horner stayed.

In a statement, Red Bull GmbH said: “Red Bull has released Christian Horner from his operational duties with effect from today and has appointed Laurent Mekies as CEO of Red Bull Racing.”

Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO of corporate projects and investments, praised Horner’s “exceptional work,” adding: “Thank you for everything, Christian. You will forever remain an important part of our team history.”

Red Bull have struggled this season, winning just twice, as Verstappen trails Oscar Piastri by 69 points. The Dutchman voiced frustration after finishing fifth at the British Grand Prix, saying, “This car is just so difficult to drive.”
