Al Maadeed, Al Abdulghani shine in QTCC opening round

Doha, Qatar: Ghanim Al Maadeed and Ibrahim Al Abdulghani won the opening races of the Qatar Touring Car Championship held at Losail International Circuit on Saturday.

A total of 23 drivers joined the opening round of the QTCC, forming the championship’s biggest grid ever. Barring Ireland’s John Ralph, all others who lined up on the grid were from Qatar.

In the first race, Al Maadeed, driving a Lotus Elise, finished in 22:19.191. Although he started from the 17th position on the grid, after the second lap he managed to reach the fourth place, before taking the lead in the fifth.

Honda S2000 driver Ibrahim al-Abdulghani was second after completing the race with a total time of 22:20.151. Friday’s pole position was for Saadon Al Kuwari but he had a problem with the engine and couldn’t fix it to take part in the races.

Nasser Al Ahbabi completed the podium with a total time of 22:36.181 in his Toyota GT86. Hamad Al Asam driving a Honda DC5 and Mohamed Al Khaiat with a Toyota GT86, finished fourth and fifth respectively.

With the reverse grid on the second race, Al Abdulghani took the victory starting from the eight position on the grid. He led the race from the second lap and had an intense battle with the defending champion Abdulla Al Khelaifi.

Al Khelaifi, who couldn’t participate in the first race as his Honda S2000 was not ready at all, finished in second place. The third position was for Al Maadeed.

Trophies were presented by QMMF president Abdulrahman Al Mannai, LCSC vice president and general manager Khalid Al Remaihi, and QMMF general secretary Abdulrazak Al Kuwari. The second round of Qatar Touring Car Championship will be held on January 10-11, 2020.
