Niemann secures maiden Saudi international title in thrilling playoff
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia: Chile’s Joaquin Niemann claimed his first Saudi International title on Saturday in sunny conditions at the Riyadh Golf Club, triumphing in a dramatic three-way playoff against Australia’s Cameron Smith and American Caleb Surratt.
The trio finished the final round locked at 21-under-par, but Niemann’s composure in the playoff saw him seal victory with a brilliant birdie on the second extra hole, outpacing both Smith and Surratt.
Niemann, who entered the final round as the overnight leader, carded a four-under-par 71, which included six birdies and two bogeys. This performance brought him into the playoff, narrowly edging out Peter Uihlein and Surratt after the third round by just one stroke.
The 26-year-old’s victory also secured him the International Series Rankings title, capping off an impressive tournament. Reflecting on his win, Niemann said, “I enjoy being in that position, but there’s times sometimes that it takes a little bit longer. It was a good day. Caleb and me, we played great.”
