McIlroy takes command at Masters, eyes historic career Grand Slam

AUGUSTA, Georgia: Rory McIlroy delivered a dazzling third-round 66 at Augusta National on Saturday, moving two shots clear at 12 under par and placing himself firmly in the driver’s seat to complete the career Grand Slam—a feat that’s eluded him for over a decade.

With the elusive Green Jacket in sight, McIlroy now finds himself carrying the weight of expectation and history. Only five golfers have completed the Grand Slam, and McIlroy is poised to become the sixth, provided he can hold off a chasing pack led by Bryson DeChambeau, who trails by just two strokes.

But Augusta hasn’t always been kind to McIlroy. The scars of his 2011 collapse, where he blew a four-shot lead with a disastrous back nine, still linger. This time, however, he insists he’s a different player—more mature, composed, and mentally ready for the challenge.

“I came in here talking about being the most complete version of myself as a golfer,” said McIlroy. “I just have to keep reminding myself of that… no matter what situation or scenario I find myself in tomorrow, I’ll be able to handle it.”

McIlroy has previously converted four of his six 54-hole leads in majors into victories, and another on Sunday would not only seal a remarkable Masters win—it would etch his name among the legends of the sport.
