Marcel Siem off to flying start at Qatar Open

Doha, Qatar: Germany’s Marcel Siem carded a dazzling 8-under par 64 on the opening day to take the overall lead at the Qatar Open Amateur Championship at Doha Golf Club Course on Thursday.

The four-time European Tour winner, a professional since 2006, is looking to find a berth at next month’s Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and would be extremely happy with his show on the first day.

Three professionals, along with the winner in the amateur category, will get a berth at the Qatar Masters, which ensures tough competition.

England’s Brandon Robinson Thompson was second with six-under while American Kevin Esteve is third at four-under.
In the amateur division, Tom Santa of France leads the standings with a two-under 70.

Andrew Ikstrums is one under 71 to be placed second while Michael Young is third on a par score of 72.

Qatar’s Ali Al Shahrani is joint fifth after a steady start of two over 74 while compatriot Saleh Al Kaabi is joint 10 with four over 76.

Both Al Shahrani and Al Kaabi will feature in the Qatar Masters, and a good outing here will do their confidence a world of good.
