Catlin claims Macau title in playoff thriller

MACAU: In a thrilling showdown at the Macau Golf and Country Club, American golfer John Catlin emerged victorious in the International Series Macau title after a tense playoff battle with David Puig. The climax unfolded on Sunday with both players showcasing exceptional skill and determination.

Catlin, 33, secured his fifth Asian Tour title in dramatic fashion, withstanding Puig’s impressive late surge. The pivotal moment came on the second playoff hole, where Catlin’s composure and precision propelled him to victory after both golfers had birdied the initial playoff hole.

Catlin’s journey to triumph was marked by his record-breaking performance in the third round, where he made history by shooting an astounding 59 – the lowest score ever recorded in Asian Tour history. His early dominance, highlighted by four birdies in the front nine, positioned him as the frontrunner. However, a slight stumble on the 11th hole allowed Puig to mount a spirited comeback.

Puig, displaying resilience and skill, capitalized on favorable conditions to narrow the gap, birdieing the 12th and eagling the 13th before further gains. With a remarkable 60 in his final round, Puig set the clubhouse lead, forcing Catlin into a playoff scenario.
