West Indies triumph over Sri Lanka with a five-wicket win in first T20I
DAMBULLA, Sri Lanka: West Indies secured a five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the first T20I in Dambulla, thanks to impressive performances from Brandon King and Evin Lewis. Chasing 179, the pair led the charge with a 107-run opening stand, setting the tone for the visitors’ successful pursuit.
Brandon King top-scored with 63, while Evin Lewis contributed 50, both playing vital roles in the chase. Despite the loss of quick wickets after their partnership, the West Indies maintained composure and reached the target with an over to spare.
Sri Lanka, having been put in to bat, posted 178/6, with Kamindu Mendis (54) and Charith Asalanka (52) anchoring the innings. The hosts struggled to accelerate early on, with Pathum Nissanka (13) and Kusal Mendis (9) dismissed cheaply. A late flourish from Asalanka and Mendis, however, boosted their total.
Ultimately, Sri Lanka’s total proved insufficient as the West Indies’ opening duo took control, guiding their team to a strong start in the series.
