Webster joins Australia squad as injury cover for Marsh

SYDNEY: Uncapped all-rounder Beau Webster has been called into the Australian squad for the five-Test series against India as a precautionary injury replacement for Mitchell Marsh.

Marsh, who bowled 17 overs during Australia’s heavy 295-run defeat in the series opener in Perth on Monday, pulled up sore following the match, raising doubts about his availability for next week’s day-night Test in Adelaide.

Webster, 30, has been in stellar form for Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield and impressed during his performances for Australia A against India A ahead of the Test series. The tall all-rounder, who initially bowled off-spin before transitioning to medium pace during the COVID-19 lockdown, has revitalized his career with his versatility.

Webster boasts an impressive first-class record, amassing 5,297 runs at an average of 37.83 and taking 148 wickets. His remarkable consistency earned him the Sheffield Shield Player of the Year award last season.

The Australian team confirmed on Thursday that Webster will join the squad in Adelaide next week as they prepare for the crucial second Test.(Reuters)
