Stokes ruled out of Champions Trophy and India white-ball tour

England Test captain Ben Stokes will miss next year’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the preceding white-ball tour of India due to a recurring hamstring injury, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed Sunday.
The 33-year-old all-rounder suffered the injury during England’s third Test defeat to New Zealand earlier this month. “Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes was not considered for selection as he continues to be assessed following a left hamstring injury sustained,” said the ECB in a statement.
Stokes, who also missed this year’s home series against Sri Lanka and a Test in Pakistan due to hamstring problems, has been sidelined to prioritize recovery ahead of England’s busy schedule, which includes a five-Test home series against India and the 2025/26 Ashes tour of Australia.
In his absence, Joe Root returns to the ODI setup for the first time since the 2023 World Cup. Fast bowler Mark Wood is also included in both the ODI and T20 squads after recovering from a stress injury to his elbow.
Jos Buttler retains captaincy of the limited-overs sides despite fitness concerns. Rising star Jacob Bethell, who impressed during his debut Test series in New Zealand, is named in both squads, while leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed will join the T20 setup in India, replacing Root.
The Champions Trophy, running from February 19 to March 9, will feature eight teams, including England, hosts Pakistan, and defending champions India.
