Sri Lanka dominates Bangladesh with Fernando’s four-wicket haul

CHATTOGRAM: Sri Lanka stamped their authority over Bangladesh on the third day of the Chattogram Test match, thanks to a stellar performance by Asitha Fernando, who claimed a crucial four-wicket haul. The hosts collapsed to a mere 178 all out, facing relentless pressure from the Sri Lankan fast bowlers.Fernando’s impressive bowling display, supported by a strategic field placement by captain Dhananjaya de Silva, paved the way for Bangladesh’s downfall.
Alongside Fernando, Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, and Prabath Jayasuriya also made significant contributions, each taking two wickets as Bangladesh crumbled from 96 for 1 to be bowled out in just 35.5 overs.Despite a brief resurgence by Bangladesh’s Zakir Hasan and Taijul Islam, who showed promising control at the crease, Sri Lanka’s bowling attack proved too strong. Zakir’s resistance was broken by a superb delivery from Vishwa, while Prabath dismissed Najmul Hossain Shanto to further dent Bangladesh’s hopes.
However, Bangladesh’s debutant Hasan Mahmud provided a glimmer of hope for the hosts by claiming four wickets, causing Sri Lanka to slip to 102 for 6. Yet, Sri Lanka’s lead remained formidable, standing at a commanding 455 runs at stumps, as they chose not to enforce the follow-on.
The day ended with Bangladesh’s fielders celebrating Kamindu Mendis’ dismissal, showcasing a momentary uplift despite the daunting task ahead. With their fifth successive sub-200 score in Tests, Bangladesh faces a monumental challenge in the fourth innings, as Sri Lanka firmly asserts their dominance in the series.
