Siraj’s grit and craft earn him spotlight in England series

LONDON: Mohammed Siraj arrived in England as Jasprit Bumrah’s deputy but left as the undisputed leader of India’s pace attack, delivering a phenomenal performance across five gruelling Tests that showcased his skill, stamina, and spirit.

With veteran seamer Mohammed Shami ruled out and Bumrah available for only three matches due to workload management, the responsibility on Siraj’s shoulders grew immense — and he rose to the challenge with remarkable resolve. The 31-year-old not only played all five Tests but also emerged as the series’ leading wicket-taker, snaring 23 wickets while bowling over 185 overs.

His lion-hearted effort was key to India drawing the series 2-2, with both victories — in Birmingham and at The Oval — coming in matches Bumrah missed. Siraj’s ability to extract 283 false shots (edges or misses), as per CricViz data, highlighted his relentless probing of the English batters.

England coach Brendon McCullum lauded Siraj’s tireless effort after India’s thrilling six-run win in the final Test. “Bowling 90 miles-an-hour in the 30th over to take five wickets… fair play,” McCullum remarked.

Siraj’s spirit did not go unnoticed. Joe Root hailed him as a “real warrior”, while Virat Kohli praised his selfless attitude, writing, “Special mention to Siraj who will put everything on the line for the team.”

Unfazed by the physical toll, Siraj remained focused on his mission. “I believe you bowl every ball for your country, not for yourself,” he said. “(When) you play for the country, give it everything.”

From a dependable sidekick to a frontline leader, Siraj’s defining series in England may just be the beginning of a new chapter in his career — one where he leads India’s pace battery with pride and passion.
