Shakeel and Rizwan steady Pakistan after Seales’ early burst in Multan

MULTAN: Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan struck unbeaten half-centuries to rescue Pakistan from a precarious position on the opening day of the first Test against the West Indies in Multan on Friday. The hosts reached 143-4 at stumps after losing the entire morning session to fog.
Opting to bat first, Pakistan stumbled to 46-4 after West Indies pacer Jayden Seales rattled the top order, including the prized wicket of captain Babar Azam, caught behind for 16. However, Shakeel (56) and Rizwan (51) staged a crucial recovery, combining for a 97-run unbroken partnership for the fifth wicket before bad light halted play.
West Indies introduced left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie in the opening over, taking advantage of a surface offering noticeable turn. Still, it was Seales who made the biggest impact, dismissing debutant opener Muhammad Hurraira for six and keeping Pakistan on the back foot early.
The day ended with the visitors holding a slight edge, but the determined stand between Shakeel and Rizwan ensured Pakistan remained in the contest heading into day two.
